FOR SHERPAS

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TO VOLUNTEER? You will need to complete a short application form on this site. You will also need to undergo a DBS check by completing an online form and by showing original documents to prove your identity to Sherpa Stemette. DO YOU WANT A CV? No, we don’t need to see your CV HOW MUCH TIME WOULD THIS REQUIRE? A minimum of 8 hours over four months IF I ONLY WORK PART TIME CAN I STILL APPLY? Yes DO I NEED TO VOLUNTEER FOR 4 MONTHS, OR CAN I VOLUNTEER FOR LESS TIME? Yes, you will need to commit to the full four months. Alternatively, if you’d like to give less time you can offer shadowing, work experience or chat to some students via OtotheB. WHAT IS ACCEPTED AS AN INDUSTRY NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY? WHAT IS MEANT BY “USEFUL CONTACT”? A person in a position that can further the success of the Sherpee. This can be in regards to the following; business, work experience opportunities, personal skills, education, advice etc. CAN YOU LET ME KNOW THE DETAILS OF WHAT’S INVOLVED FROM A COMMITMENT POINT OF VIEW? You will be a Sherpa for four months and you will have three objectives in that time: 1. Two meetings in a month 1a. At least one of your meetings must be face-to-face in your work environment 1b. Meetings should be one hour long. 2. Attend one networking event with your Sherpee 3. Connect your Sherpee with one useful contact WHAT STEM EXPERIENCE DO I NEED TO VOLUNTEER? You should be working in a STEM-related role or have studied a STEM subject. HOW WILL YOU MATCH ME WITH A SHERPEE? At one of our matching events you’ll get 3 minutes to meet with a number of Sherpees. You’ll then rank each Sherpee according to how much you’ll be able to help and guide her. The Sherpees will do the same and we’ll connect you with one of your top choices WHAT IS THE MEETGUIDE? The MeetGuide is a short document for you to use at your monthly meetings. It contains a number of exercises and suggestions for what to do with your Sherpee. WHAT IS OTOTHEB? OtotheB is Stemettes’ online platform for our global community of girls interested in STEM. We use it to provide opportunities and for impact measurement across all we do. We’ll also be using it to measure impact on Student to Stemette.

FOR SHERPEES

WHEN WILL I FIND OUT ABOUT THE DECISION? We will contact you at least 3 weeks before the next matching event you are eligible for. I’M SLIGHTLY YOUNGER THAN 15, CAN I STILL TAKE PART?

The programme is for young women aged 15 and over. You will need to be 15 when the matching event happens – look at the timeline dates to work this out.

AM I GUARANTEED A SHERPA AFTER ATTENDING THE MATCHING EVENT? We want to match you with the best Sherpa possible, so if after the event there is no-one who looks like a good match, we’ll ask you to come along to the next available matching event for your location, so that we can find you a good match. This means that you are not guaranteed a Sherpa if invited to a matching event.
