The Student to Stemette program has given me the confidence to explore and consider a future in STEM. My mentor has showed me that I don’t have to be extremely smart to get into the STE based industry; all I need is the drive and determination.

What is it like being a girl interested in STEM?

Amazing! Being a girl in STEM is rare, I feel like I have been able to be a part of a small community. Hopefully this will change alongside what society percieves of who should go into STEM.

Girls are too often embarrassed of being interested in STEM, but I think that the STS programme was a great way to meet other girls who share similar interests and break this perception.

Scary at first, especially when starting university and finding that majority of your class mates are boys, however it makes you more confident to speak out and prove that girls can do STEM too.

What advice would you give to another girl to inspire her to get a Sherpa?

It is a really great opportunity that I cannot stress enough in words how wonderful and knowledgeable the whole experience has been. I would tell other girls that this programme gives you all the advice, support and encouragement that you could ask for!

What new skills have you gained from the STS Programme?

I have learnt so much. Some of these skills included interview skills, meeting deadlines, editing CV’s to accomodate each job applied for, networking and self-confidence.

Stemettes have helped me develop my communication skills, from presenting myself at the matching event to speaking at exhibitions and on interview panels.

A key skill I learnt is confidence in speaking to professionals in a work place. This was so useful as speaking to adults in a corperate environment can be daunting sometimes.

What inspired you to apply for the STS Programme?

I was inspired to apply for the STS programme when I saw the STEMettes’ table at last summer’s Festival of Code. After visiting their ‘Codechella’ stall and realising how few girls there were in the room, I knew I wanted to get involved and go into STEM.

I am lucky to have had my passion ignited by my own parents. I feel that there are many girls out there that could achieve so much in STEM subjects, but simply don’t have the point of contact to get any information from. Having a Sherpa can really help you grasp how many doors the STEM field could open for you.

Having a family where the majority of the women work in the arts or humanities and most the men work in the STEM industry, I wanted to break the barrier between women and STEM. I wanted to show people that girls can work in STEM.
